Collin Cameron loving Lillehammer
2019-12-18

Sudbury resident and locally trained Paralympian Collin Cameron continues to excel on the world stage, reaching the podium twice over the course of the past three days as the best in the world congregate in Lillehammer (Norway), site of the current IPC World Cup races.

The 31-year old triple medal winner at the Paralympic Games in Pyeonchang in 2018 and reigning men's sit-ski World Champion kicked off his week with a silver medal performance in the sprint event, squeezed in between Russian Ivan Golubkov (gold) and countrymate Danila Britika (bronze).

"I was really feeling heavy this morning, and surprised myself with a solid qualification time," noted Cameron in a media release issue by Nordiq Canada. "I had a simple plan to just focus on keeping a high tempo and good technique for the semi, and that got me through to the finals."

"I started to feel fresher after the semi, and thought if I raced smartly, I could have a shot at second in this field."

Although considered a "sprint specialist", Cameron garnered some notoriety at the 2018 Games with his efforts in the biathlon, adding a silver medal at the 2019 World Championships in the same discipline, at a distance of 12.5 kilometres.

Clocking a time of 42:00.8 earlier today, the native of Bracebridge picked up his second medal in Norway, locking up third spot behind Martin Fleig (Germany) and Taras Rad (Ukraine), with both competitors shooting clean whil Cameron missed just one shot in four stops at the range.

"I honestly had zero goals in mind ofr today's race, other than range procedure," said the national team member. "I know why I missed the one shot, so I can take a positive from that, because I'm starting to understand why I miss whe I miss."

"It was a really sweet race today," Cameron added. "My goal was to just use it as a training race, but I started skiing faster on the final lap when Robin (head coach) yelled a split that I was in it. So, for a training race, it went really well."

Cameron is joined this week in Europe by his wife, Marley, who has seldom witnessed, first-hand, her husband in competition on foreign soil.
