Copper Cliff midgets gearing up for Silver Stick
2017-11-16

The Copper Cliff Midget “AA” Redmen are firing on all cylinders through the opening months of the 2017-2018 hockey season.

Taking their undefeated 10-0 regular season record into tournament action last weekend, coach Brian Stagg and the boys extended that streak to 16 games, securing the championship banner at the Mississauga Blackhawks showcase event against some very evenly matched competition.

Settling for a 2-2 draw with the Vaughan Panthers in game one, the Redmen got quickly back into the win column, upending the West Mall Lightning 3-1. On Saturday, a 3-2 victory over the Mississauga Beasts was followed by another 2-2 tie, this time with the Mississauga North Stars providing the opposition.

Pitted opposite the Lightning for a second time in the Sunday morning semi-final, the Copper Cliff crew rode a bolt of their own out of the gates, with Lindon Shanks netting the first three Redmen goals, helping to power his team to a 5-2 triumph over West Mall. This would give way to a second straight rematch, as the locals battled with the Panthers with gold medals on the line.

No surprise as regulation time sees the teams knotted at 2-2, only to have Jamie Wahamaa net the tournament winning goal in the three on three overtime session. It’s been quite a month or so for the local product, with Wahamaa also burying the tournament winning marker in the Sudbury 80’s Tournament, also with teams playing three on three at the time.

The Copper Cliff Redmen will enjoy tournament action once again at the beginning of December, participating in the Silver Stick Regional event in Sudbury, and heading off to Pickering the very next weekend for another chance to test themselves against top end provincial competition.

The 2017-2018 Copper Cliff midget roster includes Alexander Barry, Joshua Boucher, Eric Bourassa, Ethan Bronicheski, Bryce Brunet, Brennan Charbonneau, Jakob Fahey, Dylan Fedorowicz, Ethyn Kaboni, Chase Kanasawe-Jacko, Noah Lagrandeur, Cody Lauzon, Kameron McCue, Nathaniel Stagg, Lindon Shanks, Jamie Wahamaa, head coach Brian Stagg, assistant coaches Robert Brunet and Ray Jones, trainer Sam Merotto and team manager Darren Bronicheski.
