No less than eleven different championship banners were doled out over the weekend as the Nickel District Minor Hockey League (NDMHL) hosted their year-end playoffs for the novice, atom and peewee divisions.
Fans at three different local rinks were treated to some incredible drama, as numerous games would go right down to the final buzzer. Case in point, the Atom I Division B gold medal game, as Ethan Oliver forced overtime, netting his second goal of the game with just 11 seconds remaining, pulling the Copper Cliff Minor Atom AA Redmen even at 3-3 with the Copper Cliff Major Atom AA Redmen.
The majors would recover, however, as Lucas Antonioni matched the two goal effort of Oliver, drilling home the game winner, as he and teammate Sam Osmond accounted for all of the scoring for the winners. Nicholas Labrecque rounded things off in a losing cause.
The Nickel City Minor Atom A Devils walked off with the Alan Secord Divison A banner as Corey Lacroix provided the heroics, in overtime, lifting his team to a 2-1 win over the Elliot Lake Wildcats. Kadie Broomhead (Devils) and Tyler Stefanich (Wildcats) traded tallies earlier in the contest.
Yet another two-goal scorer settled matters in the Atom I finale as Justin Girouard hit the mark in period four, giving the Nickel City Crushers a 3-2 edge over the Nickel City North Stars. Ryano Dasilva added the remaining marker for the Crushers, with Mathieu Brassard and Jacob Hayes answering for the North Stars.
The Sudbury Major Atom A Wolves and Sudbury Peewee A Wolves combined for six goals in the opening frame, but it took a well placed shot from Carter Danyluk with a little over six minutes remaining to give the atoms a final margin of victory in a 4-3 win over the peewees.
Atom Thususka, Alec Duguay and Callum Baron also found the back of the net for the squad which claimed bragging rights in the Cookie Campbell Division A grouping, with Logan West (2) and Kayden Kennedy countering for the Peewee Wolves.
A somewhat similar story in the Raymond Gagnon Division B Peewee III gathering as the Copper Cliff Minor Peewee AA Redmen bolted out to a 3-0 lead on goals from Jack Anderson, Guyen De Silva and Christian Hodgins before the Nickel City Outlaws made things interesting.
The latter replied courtesy of Wyatt Letford, William McBride and Ethan Lowe, leaving it to De Silva to snap the deadlock early in the third period. Smooth-skating forward Liam Bridgeman scored two of his bushelful of goals on the weekend to lead the Manitoulin Panthers to a 5-2 win over the Nickel City North Stars, securing the Eddie Shack banner in the process.
Carter Lacasse, Latrell Peltier and Owen Leblanc also made their way on to the scoresheet for the islanders, with Xander Roy and Caleb Trudeau replying in a losing cause. Carter MacDonald earned the shutout and receive ample offensive support from Brody Cloutier, Cohen Arsenault and Joshia Montpellier, as the Nickel City Minor Peewee AA Jr Sons blanked the Nickel City Major Atom AA Jr Sons 3-0 in the final from the Jim Pappin Peewee II Division.
Another whitewash in the works at the novice level as Kalia Pharand holds the Copper Cliff Novice AA Redmen at bay, backstopping the Nickel City Novice AA Jr Sons to a 5-0 win and the Dan Susteric hardware. Martin Brassard and George Matsos powered the attack with two goals each, with Alex Rietze adding a solo marker.
Still with the novices, a balanced attack helped the Nickel City Bears lay claim to the Al Arbour Division B accolades, as Gabrielle Foreshew, Jacob Lamoureux, Mathieu Berthiaume and Caleb Leclair all found the back of the net in a 4-2 win over the Nickel City Stars. Gillis ODaiskey and Tanner Morris helped to keep things close for the Stars.
Exactly the same final score would be showing on the scoreboard of the Art Beaupre Peewee I final as the Sudbury Major Peewee AA Wolves doubled the Nickel City Peewee AA Jr Sons 4-2. Ben Harris, Aidan Carlson, Jesse-James Pharand and Evan Byers handled the offense for the Wolves, while Declan Baston accounted for both goals for the Sons.
Finally, the George Armstrong Atom II Division B banner would go the way of the Sudbury Major Atom A Wolves, thanks to a 4-1 victory over the Copper Cliff Minor Atom A Redmen. Vincent Midena, Wyler Whitmore, Patrick Ferrell and Sam Levesque pulled the trigger for the Wolves, while Cole Dubowsky proved to be the only Redmen who would bury the biscuit.
