With the Christmas and New Year's lull behind them, teams in the Nickel District Minor Hockey League are beginning to roll into the second half of their 2016-2017 schedule, with several games taking place in recent days.
The Nickel City Minor Peewee "A" Flyers stormed back from a 4-2 second period deficit on Wednesday, scoring three unanswered third period goals to edge the Sudbury Minor Peewee "A" Wolves 5-4.
Alex Chartier paced the Flyers with a pair of goals and an equal number of assists, with Julien Levac, Owen Seguin and Simon Pominville rounding out the attack.
A well-balanced Sudbury offense featured tallies from Chris Frappier, Kayden Kennedy, Matt Korzeniecki and Jake Dubowsky, with the Wolves outshooting the visitors 25-21 at the Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex.
The Nickel City Minor Bantam "A" Westside Warriors also kicked off the new calendar year on a winning note, though they can thank, at least partly, the penalty issues encountered by the Copper Cliff Minor Bantam "A" Redmen.
The Warriors scored twice on the power-play in the second period en route to a 3-0 win, with Preston Robert and Michael Watson pulling the trigger. Sean Potts added a little insurance with just under six minutes to play, and goaltender Hayden Wolff took care of the rest, recording 12 saves for the shutout.
Copper Cliff's Henry Mongeon was quite a bit busier between the pipes at the other end of the rink, finishing with 24 saves as the Warriors took full advantage of the 11 minors that were assessed to the Redmen.
NDMHL action continues this evening with games in Azilda (Nickel City Minor Peewee "A" Outlaws vs Sudbury Peewee "BB" Lady Wolves) and Garson (Nickel City Major Bantam "A" North Stars vs Nickel City Major Bantam "AA" Jr Sons).
