The Copper Cliff Minor Bantam "AA" Redmen encountered a few close calls along the way, but the championship final of the West Ferris Early Bird Peewee/Bantam Tournament last weekend was not one of them.
The Redmen rode a record of 2-0-1 into the semi-finals, edging the Nickel City Westside Minor Bantam "A" Warriors 3-2 before dismantling the Orangeville Flyers by a final score of 7-1.
The Copper Cliff crew kicked things off Friday afternoon with a 3-0 win over the host North Bay Trappers, as Ben Doucette scored twice, and Chris Innes capped things off.
Coach Grant Peltier and company had their first taste of the Flyers some 24 hours later, settling for a 3-3 tie with Orangeville, as Vincent Palladino, Carter Benson and Braeden Watson found the back of the net for Copper Cliff.
The offense was in high gear for game three, as the Redmen scored three goals in each and every period, downing the Warriors 9-2. Doucette paced the Copper Cliff attack with a hat trick, Innes added a pair, and Brett Lafortune, Sean Jansen, Eric Dissanayake and Watson scored once each for the winners.
Finn Bonany and Sean Potts countered for the Nickel City lads, who were clearly up for the rematch in the Sunday morning semi-final. Innes scored twice, including the game-winning goal midway through the third period, with Mederic Bourdon closing things off for the Redmen.
Cedrik Jutras and F Poupore struck paydirt for the Warriors. The gold medal encounter remained close until late in period two, when the Redmen exploded for three goals in a span of 2:20, breaking open a 2-1 game and cruising to victory.
Dissanayake (2), Lafortune (2), Tyson Belland, Watson and Doucette all found their way on to the scoresheet for Copper Cliff. The roster for the tournament winning squad includes Jonah Rouselle, Cameron Desormeaux, Sean Jansen, Vincent Palladino, Chris Innes, Nolan Peltier-Restoule, Brett Lafortune, Devin Stefanuto, Tyson Belland, Cooper Bertrand, Brett Bond, Carter Benson, Eric Dissanayake, Mederic Bourdon, Billy McIntyre, Braeden Watson and Ben Doucette.
