It was "Lucky 7" weekend for the Nickel City Major Peewee AAA Sons, travelling north to battle the Timmins North Stars in NOPHL (Northern Ontario Peewee "AAA" Hockey League) play.
Surviving a scare in game one, the Sons left nothing to chance in their final two encounters, extending their season-opening winning streak to seven games and building an eight point lead atop league standings.
The Sons kicked things off with a hard fought 5-3 win as Devun St Pierre broke a 3-3 tie with less than five minutes to play, lifting Nickel City past Timmins.
Glen Therrien, Nicholas Chokan, Ryder Thususka and Parker Dickinson also tallied for the visitors, with Derek Seguin, Sarah Verbeek and Brandon Dubosq answering in a losing cause.
Chokan exploded for a four-goal outing in game two, with St Pierre adding a hat trick as the Sons pounded the North Stars 11-1 Saturday evening.
Damian Giroux chipped in with a pair of goals for the winners, with Bryson McLoughlin and Bradley Chenier netting one each, while Verbeek countered with her second in as many games.
Nickel City put an exclamation point on the weekend series, blanking Timmins 7-0 in the finale as Andrew Rocha registered the shutout.
An impressively balanced attack would see Alex Laliberte, Therrien, Alex Rodrigue, Chenier, Giroux, Chokan and St Pierre tally once each for coach Richard Walker and company.
Both local teams will enjoy a break from league action, as North Bay visits Sault Ste Marie to kickoff the October schedule.
Nickel City and Sudbury will go toe to toe on (Wednesday) October 12th, meeting at the Edgar Leclair Community Centre (Azilda) for an 8:00 p.m. puck drop.
