All of their scoring would come in the second period, but for the Nickel Centre Flyers on this night, that would be enough. The Major Atom Flyers blanked the last place Sudbury Wolfpack 3-0, as goaltender Ryan Paquette turned aside 22 shots in registering the shutout.
The game was scoreless through until almost the midway point, when Nickel Centre converted on the power play. Kiana Verbiwski gained the blue-line and dropped a pass for Braedan Gobbo, who took advantage of a little extra traffic in front to open the scoring.
Paquette helped maintain the Flyers' lead, making likely his best save of the evening in tight, denying Peter Nykilchuk. Nickel Centre then took advantage at the opposite end, converting directly off a faceoff as Verbiwski won the draw clean to defenseman Brandon Labre, who slipped a pass across to partner Shaylene Peltier-Restoule.
Her low, hard shot snuck just inside the post, but it was enough to double the gap, with the Flyers adding a little insurance before the end of the middle frame. Hunter Demers came through with a pretty individual effort with his team short-handed, letting fly with a wrist shot that found the mark as the visitors cruised to a 3-0 win.
Taking a three goal lead to the third period, the Flyers did a nice job of limiting any chances the Wolfpack might create, something that Verbiwski suggested was definitely part of the game plan. "We played a little bit more defensively because we wanted to keep our lead" explained the young centreman, who crossed over to the Nickel Centre boys after playing a couple of years with the Lady Wolves program.
"In our end, I had to get in the corners more. We had to make sure we had a good breakout." Starting as a winger early in her hockey career, Verbiwski prefers the move to centre, and the responsibility that comes with it. "I like challenges and working hard."
