On May 5th (2008), Nickel Centre Minor Hockey coach Murray Hancock was honoured with the John Dandenault Award by the Nickel District Minor Hockey League. The award is presented to an individual or a group that promotes or displays fair play and good sportsmanship.
Born and raised in Nickel Centre, Hancock continues to reside in the area with his wife and two daughters. He began playing and enjoying the sport of hockey in the early 1980s as a Nickel Centre squirt. His love of the sport has transcended his years of involvement, including his role as a player, an NCMHA board member or a valued member of the Nickel Centre hockey coaching community.
His goals as a coach are to develop fundamental skills and instill the same passion and love of the game that he enjoys. This past season, Hancock was fortunate enough to coach with an exceptional group of men and he was quick in recognizing the ideals and efforts put forth by all the Nickel Centre Minor Atom coaching staff: Shawn McLean, Jason Lavallee, Leo St.Georges and Georges Preseault.
As a group, they continually reminded the players throughout the year that the number one goal was to have fun and put forth the best possible effort.
