Canadians and Valley girls travel to SSM for U-11 soccer showdown
2007-08-20

A pair of local youth soccer teams travelled to Sault Ste Marie over the weekend, looking to earn the right to advance to a single game showdown with a representative of the Central Girls Soccer League in September. But it was the hometown Sault Civics who would walk away with away with top honours, chalking up three wins and a tie to emerge as U-11 Girls NRSL (North Regional Soccer League) champions.

The Sault looked strong right from the opening game, blanking the Sudbury Canadians 4-0 to kick off the three team round robin competition and never looked back. The Civics closed Day One with a flawless 2-0 record after recording a second straight shutout, downing the Valley East Desjardins Dragons 3-0 on Saturday afternoon.

The local squads had no more success scoring against each other than they did facing the Sooites as the Canadians and Dragons played to a scoreless draw in the final game on Saturday. Sunday's schedule would see Sudbury and Valley East going toe to toe in the early morning match-up, producing only slightly more offense as Molly Jo Miller found the back of the net for the Dragons in a 1-0 victory.

Valley East used the momentum of the morning encounter at noon, earning a 0-0 tie with Sault Ste Marie to finish play with five points. The Sault picked up their third "W" of the weekend as action closed with the afternoon encounter, a 1-0 win for the Civics over the Canadians.

Adriane Bruni paced the Soo attack, scoring four goals over the weekend while Renee Bigras of Valley East recorded three shutouts, with the Canadians Tess Dufour earning a whitewash as well. Ironically, Sudbury and Valley East will have precious little time apart as the teams meet again Monday evening in SRCSL (Sudbury Regional Competitive Soccer League) semi-final action.

The remaining U-12 Girls Division game pits league-leading S.C. Italia against the Rayside-Balfour Bandits with the two winning teams battling on Wednesday for the divisional crown.
