Plenty of drama in junior girls flag football finals
2026-11-07

Of all of the SDSSAA football finals showcased at the James Jerome Sports Complex in the past week or so, none could match the drama of the junior flag football championship affairs - BOTH of which came down to the very last play of the game.

After battling to a scoreless tie at the half, the Marymount Regals and Lively Hawks opened things up only ever so slightly in the final 25 minutes of play.

An outside sprint from Judith Adefioye converted by Braya Kelly showed all the signs of standing up as the game-winning score for Marymount, as both teams fought the elements on a rainy night.

But Lively would drive the field as the scoreboard moved to just five plays remaining, making things interesting thanks to a touchdown run from Laila Lalonde with no time to play.

Opting to go for the two-point conversion rather than forcing overtime with the PAT, Lively coach Brad Mackenzie put the ball in the hands of Lalonde, once again, who this time sailed a high pass to Zoey Moyle, who had slipped free in the end zone, for the win.

"All I was thinking was: I had better catch this," said Moyle moments after the dramatic 8-7 win for Lively over Marymount. "I know it's slippery, but I had better catch it."

Closing out a fall campaign that enjoyed an incredible run of great weather, the finals required a bit of adaptation for all involved. "Today, with the rain, it was harder to get the flags compared to all of the other games that we've had before," said Moyle.

With the top eight in junior girls flag moving on to Division "A" quarter-final play, the Hawks and Regals were given the platform to themselves on which to shine the spotlight - which they did wonderfully, even as offenses struggled to maintain drives early on.

"The coaches told us to be patient, stay calm and don't get in each others' heads - or that would bring us down," noted Moyle of the halftime address their crew received.

Joining Lalonde and Moyle on the Lively championship roster were Samantha Howard-Smith, Katie Dowdall, Norah Vienneau, Lainey Pyper, Miley Mroczynski, Sophie MacDonald, Bailee Collins, Kinsey Spec, Isabella Corriveau, Jordyn White, Charlotte Hembruff, Rebekka Morrell, Trinity Horne, Falyne Munroe, Hexus Southwind and Thea Le Clair - with both Dowdall and Horne recording interceptions for the Hawks.

The Division "A" junior final was equally as exciting as kicker Kara Christine split the uprights from about 25 yards out on the final play, lifting the Confederation Chargers to a 10-7 win over the St Benedict Bears.

The teams which both posted undefeated records in regular season play traded touchdowns earlier in the game, with Alice Hollows crossing the goal line for St Benedict and Sierra Kitchikake doing likewise for Confed.

The balance of the Chargers lineup includes Sophie Marshall, Mae Bouchard, Danica Lacroix, Grace Perron, Nellie Brunette, Amelia Purvis, Syera Gosselin, Kallie Dumont, Reagan Lavigne, Serenity Lefrancois, Avery Bigras, Reese Morris, Lexi Baker and Tegan Lefebvre.
