Kapuskasing netminder standing tall for U18 AA Lady Wolves

The Sudbury U18 AA Lady Wolves have contested six regular season games to date this fall.

Four have finished with a score of 2-1, one resulted in a 1-1 tie, while Sudbury blanked the Soo Jr Greyhounds 1-0 in the remaining affair.

It's a pretty safe bet that given all of the above, Kapuskasing-born goaltender Brielle Theberge is quickly acclimatizing herself to the differences between boys hockey (which she played back home for years) and the U18 AA Lady Wolves, whom she joined just a few short months ago.

"Girls and boys hockey are not really the same thing," said Theberge, a 6'0" 15 year-old puck-stopper who is already making a name for herself within the Ontario Women's Hockey Association league circuit.

"Tracking the puck is different - and I am staying on my feet longer. In boys hockey, they usually shoot. Girls will play more for the rebounds."

Partnered with Sudbury standout Kloe Rienguette, the tandem have helped lead the locals to a 4-1-1 record to date, welcoming the Toronto Aeros and Barrie Sharks to town on the weekend of November 14th and 15th.

Always tall for her age, Theberge has only known the position between the pipes since she first suited up in hockey. "I always wanted to be a goalie," she said. "You can always get better and I love that about it."

"I always want to improve, so I love going out on the ice, all the time."

Still, as the scores noted about might reflect, the margin for error in the very low-scoring world of girls hockey can take a little getting used to.

"It's new hockey for me," said Theberge. "It's harder on the mental state but I am working on that, journaling and stuff. I have a book that coach Bruce (goalie coach Bruce McDougall) gave to me."

The Lady Wolves posted a record of 2-2-1-0 at the Durham Showcase last month, opening play with a 4-1 win over the Peterborough Ice Kats as Alexie Miller paced the attack with a hat trick.

Alyssa Bryant netted the only goal of game two as Kloe Rienguette backstopped the locals to a 1-0 win over the Delta Hockey Academy. The Cambridge Roadrunners handed the northern girls their first loss, edging the Sudbury reps 2-1 as Aleah Restoule sniped the only goal in a losing cause.

Rienguette registered her second shutout of the weekend in game four as the Lady Wolves played to a scoreless draw with the host Durham West Lightning before the team dropped their final encounter to the North Halton Twisters, beaten 3-2 in overtime.

Leah Salo and Lia Gallo found the back of the net for Sudbury as the team sits in second place in the Central North Division, one point back of the Etobicoke Dolphins at 4-0-2.
