Guelph rallies, handing the Wolves a second straight loss
2026-10-19

For two plus periods of play on Sunday, an upstart Sudbury Wolves' side more than hung with a team that is clearly loaded for a run at the 2027 Memorial Cup, up 2-1 on the Guelph Storm with 14 minutes to play.

When things imploded, however, they imploded hard for the visitors.

A goal from Owen Griffin knotted the contest at 2-2 before Guelph broke things open with three strikes in a stretch of just over four minutes, beating the Wolves 5-2 and handing Sudbury a second straight regulation loss after the locals opened the season with eight consecutive games recording at least one point.

Coming off a tough 4-1 loss to the London Knights on Friday, the Wolves started the weekend finale quite nicely, with Parker Smith credited for an opening goal that a Guelph defender rifled into his own net, followed by a pretty short-handed effort as Mason Walker redirected a perfect saucer pass from Vladimir Provorov.

Guelph halved the deficit in the second period when Ryan Roobroeck buried his eighth of the year behind Bjorn Bronas, that 2-1 score remaining intact until the Griffin tally at the 6:30 mark of the third.

From there, it was Illia Shybinskyi, Tyler Hopkins and Carter Stevens who would ensure a ninth win in a row for the homeside, now with a record of 9-2-0-0.

With their mark at 7-2-1-0, the Wolves return to action with a home and home set with the North Bay Battalion beginning Thursday evening in the Gateway City, closing off another three-game weekend set with a road trip to face the Oshawa Generals Sunday night.
