No less than twelve games spread over three days greeted the new season of SDSSAA (Sudbury District Secondary Schools' Athletic Association) flag football play, with almost all of them in the books by mid-evening on Wednesday.

With Mia Michaud leading the way and a defense that would not wilt, the Sacré-Coeur Griffons kicked off Senior Division B action with a 32-0 win over the Sudbury Secondary North Stars in the very first game on the schedule.

Michaud ran for majors of 53 and 6 yards and hauled in a 15 yard pass from Annabelle Fortin, adding a two-point conversion as Annabelle Pettis (5 yard run) and Alice May (2 yard pass from Fortin) rounded out the scoring.

"I liked the energy with our team," said Michaud after the game. "There's no negativity, everybody is cheering each other up, a lot of high fives going around. It's a good atmosphere."

A 16 year-old grade 11 student who first was introduced to flag football while attending Ecole St Pierre in grades seven and eight, Michaud apparently has worked on her "juke" - even if she may not have yet heard the terminology.

"I try and pretend to run one way and then do a quick change to the other side - so they bite and I have more of an opening," said Michaud. "I kind of just learned that myself."

A much closer game two in the Senior Division A ranks would see the Confederation Chargers trim the Marymount Regals 16-12 as Avery Brooks recorded a field goal (from 35 yards out, no less), a touchdown (25 yard pass from Malin Brunette and a convert after Kyra Lefebvre returned an interception 70 yards for the winners.

Paetyn Farmer and Leah Serre accounted for the Marymount scoring, both with touchdowns.

Callie Couillard (3 TDs; 4 PATs; one two-point conversion) and Ariana Tonkovic (3 TDs; one two-point conversion) inflicted most of the damage in a 50-12 Senior Division B victory for the Macdonald-Cartier Panthères over the Chelmsford Flyers.

Alice Robert chipped in with one final 6-point score for ESMC while Ryleigh Harris answered with both touchdowns for CVDCS.

In the only junior encounter of the day, the Horizon Aigles bested the Bishop Carter Gators 20-7, the Aigles up 13-7 at the half before Peyton Tessier closed out the scoring by gaining the end zone, the TD converted by Taya Messier.

Désirée Malmiste and Tessa van Drunen both recorded touchdowns in the opening 25 minutes of play, with Messier splitting the uprights once with a PAT.
