In the world of soccer, there is being relegated - and then there is being soundly relegated.

In large part due to an undermanned lineup with post-secondary soccer up and running, the Sudbury Cyclones suffered the latter in a single game showdown aimed at solidifying the final spot in Ontario Premier League1 play.

Trailing 4-0 at the half, the Cyclones dropped a 5-0 decision to Cambridge United last weekend, meaning the top level team of the local franchise will be competing in League2 play next summer - the division that they captured in 2025 to earn their promotion this year.

Kyler Monterroso netted a hat trick in the first half, with Elliot Dell also hitting the mark before Christian Ferraro closed things off late for Cambridge. Pedrag Jovicic registered the clean sheet in net for the visitors who finished second in League2 standings this summer, one point back of Masters FC with a record of 13-6-3.

The Cyclones, meanwhile, who really struggled to get going offensively in the first half of the schedule, would finish at 5-14-3, eleventh in the twelve team loop and two points behind International FC.

The contest was not a complete loss from a local perspective as the Cambridge men are led by head coach Andy Veilleux, a long-time Sudbury resident who has competed for several years in the SRCSL (Sudbury Regional Competitive Soccer League).
