It might not rival hoisting the World Cup, but for Sudbury soccer men of a certain age, claiming bragging rights at the Coppa Giovanni in Sault Ste Marie mere weeks prior to the nickel city hosting the Coppa Caruso.

Locals accomplished a clean sweep as Sudbury SC Italia Soccer Club walked away with gold in both the Over 35 and Over 45 Age Bracket Divisions.

The Over 35 crew required a bit of a mid-tournament reset after opening play with a scoreless draw with the Sault Athletics followed by a 3-0 loss at the hands of Sault Portuguese.

With no margin for error, Italia jumped out of the gate quickly in their Sunday morning rematch with Sault Athletic, riding first half tallies from Mike Asunmaa and Ben Orchard to a 2-1 win in the semis.

The Sudbury side trailed Sault Portuguese late when Mathieu Dykstra evened matters, forcing penalty kicks. P.J. Rocca, Stefano Priola and Mike Asunmaa converted for the champions while keeper and former Laurentian University standout Scott Cliff turned aside a pair of shots, earning top goalkeeper accolades in the process, with Asunmaa coping MVP honours.

The remainder of the Sudbury SC Italia Over 35 team is comprised of Dean Basso, Cody Cacciotti, Joel Cropp, Dave DeNoble, Devin Desjardins, Anas Eddin, Andrew Ferreira, Wilder Leduc, Robert Nanka-Bruce and Andy O'Neill.

A pair of Sudbury teams were entered in the Over 45 grouping, with the luck of the draw pitting them against each other in semi-final action as SC Italia doubled Sudbury Athletic 4-2.

Squaring off against the defending champion Soo Italia eleven, the rivals to the east looked full measure for their crown, blanking the host side 3-0 as John Malone registered the clean sheet, recognized as the top goalkeeper in his division.

Dean Basso and Brad Hann shared the MVP award, Manuel Cisternas was awarded top goal scorer hardware and Chris Anselmo, Brian Ashton, Nader Aissa, Ryan Love, Anas Eddin, Andy O'Neill, Behrad Madj, John Maione, Fabian Melo, Joe Musinga and John Svalina constructed the balance of the SC Italia Over 45 roster.
