The Cumberland U19 Panthers had surrendered just 69 points against in six OWFL (Ontario Women's Football League) regular season games this summer.
Led by the one-two punch of Maddie Veevers and Owasika Olaterere, the Sudbury U19 Spartans lit the visitors up for no less than nine touchdowns in their semi-final affair Saturday at the James Jerome Sports Complex, thrashing the Panthers 62-22 and earning a berth in the league final in the process.
Once again, they will be tested as the Sudbury girls face a Peel Region Panthers team that not only recorded four shutouts this summer but did not allow more than eight points by their opponents - and that coming in a 14-6 semi-final win yesterday as well.
To boot, the Peel that opened the 2026 campaign with a 7-0 loss to the London WOLFPAAC, following that effort up with six straight triumphs, will enjoy home field advantage as the OWFL finals are all slated to take place next Sunday (June 12th) at David Suzuki Secondary School in Brampton.
It is there that the Peel Panthers will look to find a way to slow down running backs Maddie Veevers (5 TDs - 321 yards) and Owasika Olaterere (4 TDs - 232 yards), with both Caileigh Ryan and Sophie Leveillé also able to carry the ball, if needed.
Defensively, the U19 Spartans were led by linebacker Robin Price (10 tackles), with Mealla Lacroix (8) and Fola Alabi (7) not all that far behind, statistically speaking.
Sudbury will have a chance to double-up next Sunday as the U16 Spartans also advanced - though they are likely to enter that contest as clear underdogs.
The locals outlasted the Cumberland Panthers 60-46 in their semi-final encounter and will await the result of the remaining final four battle today as the Peel Panthers (6-0) face the Bel-Air Lions (0-6).
More daunting is the fact that Peel swept the season series from Sudbury by scores of 56-36 and 48-8. That said, the nickel city girls do not enter that contest without weapons, despite losing starting quarterback Lilianne Jodouin to a broken femur two weeks ago.
Offensively, Leah Johnston (5 TDs - 234 yards rushing) and Laila Lalonde (3 TDs - 5 PAT (2 pts) - 3 receptions for 134 yards) were front and centre, while Gia Rocca complemented her work at QB (5-8 for 144 yards) with an impressive performance defensively (5 tackles for loss; fumble recovery) as well.
Joining in the fun on that side of the ball were Martine Gaucher (10 tackles + interception) and Kloe Cousineau (six tackles) as these teams averaged a combined total of more than 100 points per game in their three head to head battles this summer.
