The Washington State Cougars men's baseball team made their first appearance at NCAA Regionals since 2010 by capturing their first conference title since winning the Pac-10 North in 1995 - and a pair of Sudbury products played a huge part in making this happen.
To be clear, Gavin Roy and Scott Rienguette were not just along for the ride.
After finishing second on his team in batting average (.353) and leading the Cougars in on-base percentage (.455), Roy would take his game to another level at the Mountain West Baseball Championships as Washington State posted a 3-1 record to earn the banner.
For his part, Roy went a combined .444 at the plate (8/18), going 2/5 with a home run and two RBIs in a 5-1 opening game win over Air Force and following that up with a 3/6 - 5 runs batted in performance against San Diego State as the Cougars posted a 14-9 victory.
The Aztecs (San Diego State) came back to force a fourth game, toppling Washington State 9-2 before Roy (2/3 -3 runs scored) and company blasted their way to a 14-4 triumph and a full scale celebration.
Returning from an injury and taking on an ever-increasing role in the Cougars' bullpen, Scott Rienguette came on in relief in game four with the contest tied at 3-3. All the northern Ontario lad would do is toss 3.2 innings of one hit ball, striking out six and allowing his team to clinch the deal.
Both were looked to in key situations in on the NCAA Regionals, with Roy drawing a pair of walks and scoring the game-tying run in the sixth as Washington State edged Oregon State to kick things off.
Though the Cougars would ultimately fall 4-0 to the Oregon Ducks in game two, it was Rienguette would was handed the ball late in the contest and his team trailing by a run.
Both Roy and Rienguette are graduates of St Charles College as well as the Sudbury Voyageurs and Baseball Academy programs.
