The pitching depth might not yet be exactly where the Sudbury 13U Voyageurs would like to see it, exposed on day two of a four game set as the locals paid a visit to the Golden Horseshoe, battling it out on the diamond with the Niagara Falls Falcons.
Day one, however, was everything the northern squad could have hoped for.
The youngest of the Voyageurs entries into the PBLO (Premier Baseball League of Ontario) earned a split last Saturday at Oakes Park, recording their first ever PBLO victory and limiting the Falcons to just six total runs over the course of games one and two.
The opener saw the Sudbury lads firing on all cylinders, getting in done on both sides of the ball with none better than starter Rory McDavid who pitched four innings of scoreless one-hit ball, striking out 11 batters.
Trent Morris kept the Falcons in check for the balance of a 10-2 win, surrendering two hits, four walks over three innings and striking out a pair.
The big bashers at the plate consisted of Milo MacMillan, who drove in five with a pair of home runs and Brady Ceaser, who went 3/4 with a home run and three ribbies. Nathan Seranini also enjoyed a multi-hit day while Reid Pitre, Tristan Williamson, Blake Walton and Trent Morris crossed the plate once each.
A second straight impressive encounters for the Sudbury hurlers went for naught in game two as Max Gould and Nathan Serafini combined to limit the Falcons to six hits, walking six and striking out nine in a 4-1 loss.
While the Voyageurs outhit the homeside 9-6, with Max Gould, Rory McDavid and Milo MacMillan all smacking out a pair of safeties each, the squad under the direction of coach Jean-Gilles Larocque could not string together a rally, with an RBI single from MacMillan driving home Brady Ceaser with the only run for the visitors.
The final two outings were lopsided affairs as the team that also includes Oscar Liang, Caleb Seguin, Ava Tonnos and Leaf Eadie find themselves back in action at home on June 20th and 21st, welcoming the Ontario Prospects to the Terry Fox Sports Complex.
