Very quickly asserting her competitiveness as an NCAA freshman with the Western Michigan Broncos, Sudbury golfer Lea Lemieux would accompany the team to the MAC (Mid-American Conference) Conference Championships this week in Akron, Ohio.
Named as an alternate to the five-person team, Lemieux opened her first post-secondary season at the Rio Verde Collegiate in Arizona in February with rounds of 82-84-82 (248), within striking distance of junior teammate Bella Brooks (242) and sophomore Saanvi Venkatesh (245).
Earlier this month, Lemieux also made the cut for her team in terms of tournament entries, getting a chance to tee-off at the Therese Hession Buckeye Invitational in Columbus, posting a three round score of 252.
With nine golfers on the Broncos roster, just getting a chance to be in the lineup is considered a pretty decent accomplishment as a freshman at most NCAA schools, with Lemieux sure to benefit from the experience that comes with attending the MAC year-end tournament that gathers all ten teams.
Seeded 19th in the country entering the tournament, the Eastern Michigan Eagles ranked first in the MAC, followed by the Kent State Golden Flashes (#28 in country), with Western Michigan slotted at seventh in the MCA, #196 overall.
Lemieux is a graduate of Lockerby Composite and is currently studying mechanical engineering.
