Bringing together finalists from no less than four different groupings, the Idylwylde Golf & Country Club closed off the 2025-2026 curling season in style, hosting a sold-out year-end banquet last weekend - the highlight of which was the presentation of an honourary lifetime curling membership to Olympic bronze medal winner Tracy Fleury.
Straight Out of Sunday defended their Friday Night Mixed League title as the team of Jake Crawford, Chris Jillings, Kasey Crawford and Elina Jillings (with Ryan Sims sparing in the final) bested the Southside Sweepers (Denis Lauzon, Cathy Lauzon, Barry Tansley, Sharon Tansley, Al Walker, Deb Walker, Colleen Montgomery), claiming the hardware for a second straight year.
"We played really well today," suggested Kasey Crawford, a 14 year-old grade 8 student at Lasalle Secondary. "The ice was really tricky, a little difficult for both teams to figure out."
"I think we got a good handle on it and we were able to make our shots."
The team which has seen long-time junior curling mentor Chris Jillings welcome young talent who are first introduced to curling via the Sunday morning Little Rocks program is honestly everything that Crawford could ask for - and more.
"I really like doing all of the sweeping that my brother (Jake) and I get to do," she said. "It's really fun and a good way to be active. I also like learning more about the game of curling from Chris."
"He understands the strategy really well."
There was surely a great deal of strategic maneuvering in play as the Laurentian Voyageurs varsity teams went toe to toe in the All-Sorts Competitive League grand finale.
It would take an extra end, but the women earned bragging rights this year as Bella Croisier, Piper Croisier, Mya Smith, Valerie Ouimet and Kelton Tellier toppled the men's contingent of Olivier Bonin Ducharme, Ian Deschene, Owen Allard and Julian Mariotti.
The Thursday Night Men's grouping featured the "A" championship rink of Pat Chartier, Rich Schmidt, Steve Pellatt and Chris Jillings while the "B" Division accolades went the way of Fern's Carpet Warehouse (Jay Jewett, Jake Tapper, Robert Montgomery, Ian Westaway).
The ladies also provided some drama to the evening as Jan Pula drew to the button on her last shot, leading the Thursday Women's Daytime League crew of Margo Loney, Liz Moore and Janet Gunn to a close win over the Monday Evening Women’s League quartet skipped by Nancy Mossey.
