An incredible week of curling came crumbling down with one bad end for the tandem of Kira Brunton and Jake Horgan.
Competing at the 2026 Canadian Mixed Doubles Curling Championship in Surrey (B.C.), the Ontario reps who were extremely familiar faces in their youth at Sudbury and area curling clubs ran the table in Pool D, finishing round robin play with a record of 6-0 and earning their spot directly in the quarter-finals.
And on Thursday evening at the Cloverdale Curling Club, Team Brunton / Horgan scored four in the third end, carrying a 7-4 lead into the eighth and final end facing the Ontario pair of Serena Gray-Withers and Victor Pietrangelo.
Less than 15 minutes later, an 8-7 loss signaled the end of the line for the Brunton / Horgan partnership that entered the event ranked fourth in the country.
The Gray-Withers - Pietrangelo twosome were not done yet.
Trailing 4-3 after six ends versus Rachel Homan and Brendan Bottcher, the eventual champions scored one with the hammer and followed up with a steal of two in the eighth to move on to the final with a 6-4 triumph.
Again, Gray-Withers / Pietrangelo apparently were not all that fazed after surrendering a six-spot in the opening end to Zoe Cinnamon and Johnson Tao, slowly chipping away at the lead but still down 9-7 after seven ends.
One more rabbit to be pulled out of the hat with Easter just a week away as the comeback is made complete thanks to a three-point end as Gray-Withers and Pietrangelo will now represent Canada at the 2026 World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship in Geneva from April 25th to May 2nd.
