Cubs complete their sweep of the Gold Miners
2026-03-27

With their "scare game" out of the way, the Greater Sudbury Cubs completed the task at hand in workmanlike fashion, tying a bow on a four game first round sweep of the New Liskeard Gold Miners with a 10-3 thumping on Tuesday.

Briir Long continued to hold the hot hand offensively for Sudbury, netting a hat trick while solo markers were potted by Alex Valade, Lucas Antonioni, Daks Klinkhammer, Eidan Macartney, Owen King, Mateo Signoretti and call-up Khade Metatawabin.

Mason Walker and Klinkhammer chalked up three assists apiece, Cole Wreggitt and Long added a pair of helpers each and Matthew Vahramian picked up his first win of the series in his first start, turning aside 28 of the 31 shots that he faced.

Tysen Andersen, Jake Williams and Jeremy Schoenborn countered with one goal each for the Gold Miners, who were unable to build any momentum from a very tough loss in game three on home ice, beaten 2-1 by the two time defending league champions.

While some of the other first round series are done and some are on-going, the matchup between the Powassan Voodoos and Soo Eagles is seemingly hanging in limbo.

Early signs on Wednesday night suggested that the Eagles had completed a four game sweep of the Voodoos thanks to a 3-2 win, in overtime.

All fine except that the game-winning goal was apparently scored on a Soo power play that was assessed as a four on three man advantage but should have been a five on four as three separate minors were tagged on the same play at 6:56 of overtime: two to Powassan and one to the Soo.

Reports out of Powassan indicate that the Voodoos staff made clear their protestation at the time and given that this is a clear misinterpretation of a rule as opposed to a judgement call, the league is in the unenviable position of needing to make a ruling soon on the situation.
