Hometown pride was on full display late last month in Hamilton as a pair of Sudbury teams emerged victorious at the NSA Canada Ontario Provincial Men's & Women's Slo-Pitch Championships.

Both the Five Cent Fury (women) and the Sudbury Silver Backs (men) captured Division "D" banners at the event, with the squads in close enough proximity as to provide some level of community support to their local slo-pitch brethren.

The Fury survived a pair of one run victories on route to the final, bouncing Down the Liners from Thessalon 18-14 in the championship affair to claim their hardware.

"This is the first year this team has been together and we put up quite a battle, never giving up and leaving it all on the field," noted team contact Kristin Ferguson. "I am so proud of this team for not caving in under pressure."

The roster for Sudbury Five Cent Fury included Veronique Chartrand, Desiree Charbonneau, Jennifer Foote, Skylar Whitmore, Emmaly MacPherson, Meg Houle, Crystal Bigras, Renee Bigras, Joddie Lalonde, Danika Brabant, Kiana Wardell, Jenna Hofing, Amy Chartrand, Jen Stobo and Kristin Ferguson.

On the men's "D" side of the draw, the Silverbacks mounted an amazing comeback midway through their nine game run, ensuring the team an extra life in the playoffs, one which came in handy as the Sudbury gents rallied from a 14-8 loss to YRM Defcon from Goldman, taking the rematch 16-6 to secure gold in their bracket.

"We were down four runs with two out in the last inning and strung together six consecutive hits to walk it off," noted coach Brian O'Sullivan of his team's 17-16 triumph.

The Sudbury Silver Backs lineup is comprised of Cody LaChapelle, Milo Gaudin, Tom Vernelli, Drew Duke, Eric Venne, Josh Favaro, Kevin McCoshen, Jason Turcotte, Joel Moncion, Travis Lelievre, Dustin Dube, Alex Frappier, Alexandre Leger, Sean Jackson, Brian O'Sullivan and bat boy Wayd O'Sullivan.
