L.U. Voyageurs guard transfers to the Kansas Jayhawks
2025-08-04

For the second straight school year, Nginyu Ngala is having to uproot and move to a whole new institution - though we highly doubt that the 26 year-old native of Montreal really minds the off-season shuffle a whole lot.

Just a year after transferring over from the Dalhousie Tigers and helping to lead the Laurentian Voyageurs to a seven-win improvement in 2024-2025, all while pursuing his masters at L.U., the 5'10" guard finds himself making headlines yet again.

In committing to the Kansas Jayhawks of the NCAA, the third team OUA all-star easily becomes the most noteworthy "transfer-out" athlete in the history of Voyageurs' basketball.

"When he came to Laurentian, the challenge he faced - and something we spoke about often, was: can you lead a team as a number one option?," noted Laurentian head coach Brandon Edwards. "All of last season, we helped him to grow and adjust to a new conference, a new role as a veteran leader with a lot of attention geared towards him."

"I believe that elevated his game."

The Voyageurs' Male Athlete of the Year in 2024-2025 would lead his team in scoring (14.9 ppg), ranked third in rebounding (4.6 per game) and second in assists (3.1 per game), all while becoming the only member of his team to start all 22 regular season games.

A two-time AUS champion during his time at Dalhousie, Ngala slides into a very good fit with the Jayhawks.

"We had one roster spot remaining and we thought we addressed a need in that now we have a backup point guard who we feel is very capable with his maturity and skillset to play minutes on our team," said long-time Kansas head coach Bill Self.

"Nginyu is quick, he can shoot, and he should be a great example, not only on the court how to play, but also in the locker room."

"He already has a degree in hand and I knew he wanted to play professionally or explore other opportunities," added coach Edwards. "He has accomplished some great things in his time at Laurentian, but he is ready for his next challenge."
