Four different goaltenders started in the four games that the Sudbury U7 Paperweight Rockhounds contested at the Rob MacDougall Memorial Tournament in Oakville, the locals posting a 2-2 record at the event.
This was all about the experience for the 15 youngsters who recorded the first U7 Rockhounds tournament victory in three years this summer.
Sure, the team also took it on the chin, drawing a very tough Lincoln Redcoats squad as the northern kids were still getting their bearings.
But by the time game two rolled around - a 5-2 win over the Stayner Hitmen - the defensive lessons from the opener had been thoroughly engrained.
Goals by Asterix Pilon (3 - after scoring four in game one), Beau Rothwell (with his second in as many games) and Nixon Oliphant-McPhee supplied the support for Sudbury goaltender L.J. Landriault, who enjoyed a far quieter contest than game one keeper Austen Beskorowany.
A quick start against the Hamilton Bengals paid off, big time, as a first period hat trick from Asterix Pilon and another tally from L.J. Landriault had Sudbury ahead by three, going into the middle stanza.
From there on in, it was a bit of a back and forth affair, with Jude McEwen, Nixon Oliphant-McPhee and Asterix Pilon adding one goal each and Max Hepting coming up with big saves at critical times as the Rockhounds pick up win number two by the final count of 7-4 over the Bengals.
With a numbers crunch forcing all team members to dig deep, the Sudbury reps battled til the end, beaten 8-2 in their final outing by the Huntsville Hawks. Asterix Pilon netted both of the Rockhounds goals while some big saves from Nathan Busch saved the game from hitting double digits.
Rounding out the Sudbury roster were Logan Fox, Noah-André Pellerin, Brooks Chuipka, Mikkel Ouellette, James Dover, Daxton Lane, Rowan Davidson and coaches Mitch McEwen, Tyler Beskorowany, Jordan Hepting and Al Pilon.
