U22 Rockhounds take #1 ranked team in Ontario to overtime
2025-07-14

The Sudbury U22 Rockhounds would likely be more than happy if the OLA (Ontario Lacrosse Association) championships were to start next weekend.

In reality, the local box lacrosse powerhouse will need to wait until early August - but another outstanding tournament performance has the lads chomping at the bit to put themselves to the test against the very best teams in Ontario.

The Rockhounds capped off an outstanding weekend at the Conradi-Engemann Memorial Tournament in Niagara-on-the-Lake, taking the top ranked team in Ontario to overtime before being saddled with their first loss of the event.

This, of course, after asserting themselves in Group 4 round robin play, reeling off three straight wins.

Sudbury took it to the Wallaceburg Griffins right out of the gate, posting a lopsided 10-1 win on Friday night as Alex Hachez (3 goals) and Kai D'Amour (2) accounted for half of the Rockhounds' offensive production.

Rounding things off with one goal each were Malik Jakubo, Ben Harris, Isaiah Peltier, Xavier Esquimaux-Osawamick and Jacob Barney.

The Kawartha Lakes Fury managed to keep game two close for a bit, just two goals down entering the third before the northern reps pulled away with a 5-0 whitewashing of their central Ontario opponents.

Alex Hachez, Malik Jakubo, Xavier Esquimaux-Osawamick, Jacob Barney and Joe Gouchie bulged the twine for coach Mike Miron while goaltender Mason Robertson stood tall in keeping the Fury off the board from start to finish of the contest.

Goals galore in game three for the GSLA folks as the Rockhounds triple the Fort Erie Hawks 9-3, with Jacob Barney enjoying an encounter to remember, whipping four shots past the Hawks netminder.

Rounding out the scoring for Sudbury were Ben Harris, Xavier Esquimaux-Osawamick, Isaiah Peltier, Malik Jakubo and Noah Larcher.

The one true test for the Rockhounds would come against the tournament champion Gloucester Griffins as Sudbury scored twice in the first, courtesy of tallies from Ben Harris and Cody Wahl, goals that were offset by a pair of regulation markers from their opponents.

The 3-2 Gloucester win in overtime came in a match-up that featured only three minor penalties, in total.
