Bats go silent on day two as 18U Voyageurs settle for a split
2025-07-02

The Sudbury U18 Voyageurs should have checked their bats before leaving London last Sunday afternoon.

After pounding out 27 hits on Saturday in sweeping a two game set against the 17U and 18U London Badgers on the road, the locals found themselves limited to a total of just seven hits when the teams reconvened the next day to do it all over again.

For whatever reason, the Voyageurs could not follow up on the momentum of game one victories by scores of 5-2 (18U) and 13-4 (17U), dropping a pair of contests on day two with scoreboards that would read 7-0 (18U) and 6-2 (17U).

Calum Baron continues to anchor the Sudbury pitching rotation, turning in a solid six-inning performance in the opener (5 hits; 1 earned run; four walks; 7 strikeouts), with Hudson Fletcher mopping things up in the seventh inning on just 14 pitches.

The Voyageurs scored three times in the top of the seventh to earn the win as Brody Mabbott (3/3 - 2 RBI), Ethan Thompson (2/3) and Calum Baron (1/3 - 2 runs scored + RBI) led the visitors at the plate.

Some of the same names were right back at it in game two as the middle of the order trio of Braiden Paul, Calum Baron and Ethan Thompson, along with center fielder Max Arnold combined to account for 12 of the 16 Sudbury hits, scoring eight of the 13 runs and driving in nine.

Starting pitcher Ryan Spencer handed over the ball in the fifth inning to reliever Will Burns, his team leading 10-4, as the latter surrendered just one hit and a pair of walks while pounding the zone with strikes in three innings of work.

Though there were no multi-hit games for the Sudbury lads on Sunday, both Calum Baron (7/14) and Braiden Paul (5/12) capped off very solid weekends at the plate as the locals are joined by the Sudbury 16U crew, attending a Pastime Tournament at the University of Notre-Dame.
