Making their first ever trip to the Canadian Collegiate Flag Football Championships, the Laurentian Voyageurs women saw a little bit of everything over the course of a three-day span in Regina, Saskatchewan.
The opening game was an eye-opener as Laurentian went toe to toe with a representative of the province that has produced every single national champion to date (Québec) as the Université du Québec a Montréal overwhelmed the local crew 59-0.
With that contest behind them, however, the Voyageurs ran a string of five straight far more competitive matchups.
The L.U. reps very quickly regained a level of confidence thanks to a 20-20 affair opposite the Ontario champion University of Toronto Blues, closing out play on Friday.
More positive steps Saturday morning as coach Lance Patrie and company hit the win column, downing the University of Regina 24-12 and provided a decent test against the eventual gold medal winners, beaten 39-13 by the Université de Montréal Carabins.
With a 1-2-1 record in pool play, the Voyageurs dropped a 30-20 decision to the Western University Mustangs in a consolation semi-final but concluded play on a winning note, slotting into ninth place thanks to a 20-19 victory over the University of Regina in overtime.
