Soccer season wastes little time hitting its stride
2025-04-26

The crossover from skates to cleats is a quick one in these parts.

We’ve not yet exited the month of provincial hockey championships and already play is beginning for the Greater Sudbury Soccer Club (GSSC) competitive ranks who have entered iModel play this summer.

For some, these upcoming matches simply mark the seamless transition they hope to make from a winter of indoor competition, a testament to both the benefit of an indoor facility as well as the ever increasing number of youth soccer talent willing to devote year-round training to their craft.

Such is the vision for head coach John Georgievski and the GSSC U13 Impact Boys, a squad who are tackling the challenge that is the iModel template – but only after spending the past several months as part of a 15-team division of the Provincial Indoor Soccer League, finishing in sixth place overall.

“The team demonstrated significant growth and development in many aspects: technically, tactically, physically and psychologically,” noted Georgievski, having just finalized his outdoor roster and with a month or so of practice time ahead before kicking off their summer schedule at home in late May.

“With dedication, discipline and a strong work ethic, we are looking forward to a great summer season,” he added.

The U13 Impact boys roster features: Emrik Perron, Cooper Annett, Thomas Fitzmaurice, James Villeneuve, Zander Rimes, Emmett Prodan, Marco Ponce, Sachsen Croome, Stephen Ademuyiwa, Kofi Ghartey, Levi Gonder, Dat Tran, Clark Lowen, Marcelo Cisternas, Maximus Georgievski, Yuvraj Singh, Gaddiel Appiah-Hagan, Luca Renelli and Mofe Olusola-Kuteyi.

Joining Georgievski as assistant coach is Manuel Cisternas, with Tamara Morton serving as team manager.

Coach Steph Marier and the Impact U14 Girls do not have to wait nearly as long, taking to the road this weekend for games against both the Woodbridge Strikers and Markham Lightning to launch the first segment of their iModel schedule.

Returning a very solid core of young talent from the team which captured the U15 division at the Great North Winter Classis in Sudbury, Marier is teaming up with assistant coach Al Couillard and receiving plenty of support from manager Silvana D’Angelo as they prepare for a busy summer ahead.

The 2025 edition of the U14 Impact girls team is as follows: Martina Cuevas Puerta, Alayna Marier-Mikus, Sierra Ranger, Isabella Fraser, Desiree Malmiste, Emma-Leigha Morin, Jessie Fu, Braya Kelly, Zoey Brazier, Alexa Boissonneault, Violet Boisvenue, Callie Couillard, Julia D’Angelo, Kara Christine, Leah Lalonde, Brooklynn Bertrand, Veronica Paquette, Taya Messier and Elsa Rancourt.

Bringing together elements of two former teams, coach Doug Rosener is taking the U18 Impact Girls into battle beginning with tournament play in St Catharines next weekend followed by a pair of league games at home on May 10th and 11th.

The team, which now includes talent from at least three different years of birth (2007-2008-2009), began as a well-intentioned initiative to provide at least some option for girls of this age, taking their first steps in the Huronia District Soccer League and continuing their ascension over the years to include a healthy amount of success along the way.

The 2025 U18 Impact team is comprised of Abbeygale Dagostino, Aria Petroski, Jordyn Olsyn, Jo-Jo Ajueze, Chiana Rocca, Reece Chaumont, Abigail Betsill, Ava Massimiliano, Bella Massimiliano, Janelle Richer, Ariana Tonkovic, Isabella Gilbert, Natalia Begic, Izzy Roy, Kynlee Cresswell, Amy Flores, Bryn Hobson, Leticia Silva, Misaki Diavolitsis and Ryann Chevrier.

With three phases to navigate, the Impact U16 Boys got an early jump on their summer plans as the team calendar features an extra five games on the schedule. Coach Francois Nzotungwanimana noted that in addition to the many returning familiar faces, the 2025 crew welcomes aboard three newcomers making the jump from the GSSC HDSL team.

Back again are Juan Acevedo Otalvaro, Noah Palladino, Samuel Julius, Costa Urso, Harry Yeamans, Frank Nzotungwanimana, Landen Lake-Rego, Reid Faux, Matteo Ceccon, Jason Reich, Josh Uloghobui, with that core now adding the fresh skill-sets of Gabriel Moreira, Carey Bellemare and Massimo Montini to the mix.

The GSSC lads are currently in a grouping that includes Jarvis SC, Barrie Spirit, Bryst Academy, Thornhill Thunder and Newmarket United. The Impact dropped a 2-0 decision to Barrie earlier this month and will face Bryst and Jarvis at the Concord Thornhill Turf on Sunday.

Of course, the highlight for the upcoming weekend is Sudbury Cyclones double header action on Saturday at the James Jerome Sports Complex as the women’s team will contest their historic first encounter opposite Pickering FC at 2:00 p.m. to kickoff League2 Northeast play.

In addition to signing the likes of Bowmanville native and Jacksonville State alumnus Emma Meadows as well as OUA all-star Cassidy Brooks from Georgetown, the Cyclones will have no lack of local talent on board.

Names such as Serena San Cartier, Kiara Levac, Brooke Dugas, Makayla Bertrand, Allie Weiler, Arijana Tuttle, Natasia San Cartier, Tamara (Johnson) Cayen, Emily Winsor, Kaja Beljo, Kiana Levac and McKenna Cresswell are all known entities to anyone who has followed the local youth soccer scene closely in the past decade or two.

Later today, the men’s League1 Championship division team will look to secure three points fr the second time this month, having already recorded a 1-0 win over York United Academy. The men, who will also face Pickering FC, were backstopped by a clean sheet effort from keeper Lucas Cidade, with Brandon Moxam netting the game’s only goal.

The men’s game is set to start at 7:00 p.m., also at the James Jerome Sports Complex.

Finally, high-school soccer got their season rolling last Tuesday with action now monopolizing the city’s only turf field pretty much five days a week from the early afternoon through until 8:00 or 9:00 p.m. on most days.
