Cubs close out series with a shutout - again
2025-04-10

The Greater Sudbury Cubs have reeled off eight straight victories in punching their ticket to the NOJHL (Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League) championship final - and for the second series in a row, the Cubs closed things off in style, posting a shutout in game four.

The Cubs jumped on the Soo Thunderbirds early Wednesday evening in Sault Ste Marie, up 3-0 before the contest was eight minutes old and cruising to a 5-0 win as Karsen Chartier stopped all 25 shots that he faced in net for Sudbury.

A pair of goals by Lucas Signoretti (his 11th and 12th of the playoffs) and singles from Samuel Assinewai, Lucas Antonioni and Daks Klinkhammer eased the visitors to their comfortable triumph and a return visit to the NOJHL final.

The Cubs now await the winner of the Hearst Lumberjacks - Timmins Rock semi-final, with the former taking a three games to one lead into a home affair in Hearst Friday night.

Sudbury claimed their first NOJHL title since 2007-2008 when they bested the Powassan Voodoos in five games last spring, earning their first trip to the Centennial Cup since the 1991 season when the team hosted the national playdowns in Sudbury.

The NOJHL best of seven championship series is expected to kick off likely next Wednesday (April 16th) or Thursday (April 17th) evening in Sudbury, with a pair of games taking place at the Gerry McCrory Sports Complex before the showdown shifts to either Hearst or Timmins.
