Girls tackle summer football comes to Sudbury
2025-04-09

The expansion in the offerings of the Sudbury Spartans football program continues - and now includes both sexes.

Earlier this month, the Spartans announced the addition of two women's tackle football teams to their stable of squads, marking a historic step forward for girls in northern Ontario looking to participate in the sport at a competitive level.

The Sudbury teams will compete in the U16 Division (players born in 2010 - 2012) and the U19 Division (2006 - 2009) of the Ontario Women's Football League (OWFL), the premier tackle football league for women and girls in this province.

The expansion reflects the rapid growth of women's tackle football, across the country, with more young women embracing the spectrum that runs from the grassroots flag game right across to the competitive full contact version.

"The growth of women’s tackle football in Canada has been phenomenal and we’re proud to be part of that movement," noted Gord Goddard, Manager - Sudbury Spartans in a team issued release.

"These teams will give girls in Northern Ontario the chance to play tackle football at a high, competitive provincial level — something that wasn’t available just a few short years ago. The future of football is inclusive and it’s happening right here in Sudbury."

While the U19 squad have filled out their roster, there are a few positions that remain to be filled within the U16 crew. The Spartans are welcoming additional players for the U16 team and encourage any interested girls, regardless of previous football experience, to come out and give it a try.

Equipment, coaching, and a supportive team environment will be provided to help young athletes learn and develop their skills. For more information, contact Gord Goddard at gordgoddard@hotmail.com
