Ella Prosperi, Mauro Frescura, Lauren Bouchard, Zavier Gervais: just some of the local alpine skiers that are well worth a follow in the years to come as a Sudbury (and northern Ontario) revival in the sport continues to be felt.

A member of the Adanac Ski Club, 12 year-old Ella Prosperi was recently named to the Ontario team that will be competing at the Can-Am Mackenzie U14 races beginning March 31st through to April 3rd.

Right in the middle of the action at Mont Tremblant are NOD (Northern Ontario District) teammates Kassandra Real and Benjamin Campbell, both from Searchmont.

From there, Prosperi and Real will make their way west, the tandem forming the provincial delegation in their age bracket who are taking part in the 2025 O2E Brands Whistler Cup (April 9th to 13th).

The event brings together more than 440 talented athletes from 18 different countries, worldwide, with Prosperi breaking through as the first local to compete in several decades.

Also making the cut in the U16 Whistler Cup grouping is Massey resident and Elliot Lake Ski Racers speedster Ava Currie, a student at Ecole secondaire La Renaissance in Espanola.

Qualifying for a separate out-of-province competition was Lauren Bouchard of Adanac Ski Club as the senior at St Benedict CSS took part in the U16 Eastern Canada Championships in Collingwood.

Others NOD skiers who qualified successfully for the Eastern Canada meet were Quintin Thorsteinson, Ava Currie and Myla Goulding from Elliot Lake and Searchmont racers Maelee Lesnick and Emmett Kreps.

Earlier in March, Elliot Lake Ski Racers youngsters Mauro Frescura and Zavier Gervais were among the handful who swept slalom and giant slalom races at the Joe Sarich Classic hosted at Mount Dufour in Elliot Lake.

Frescura (U12) posted combined times of 28.57 and 48.29 seconds in placing ahead of Nicolas Porpelia (Searchmont - slalom - 31.16) and Rohan Saidi-Smith (Adanac - GS - 52.89) while Gervais found himself comfortably ahead of Liam Cavanagh (Adanac - 35.53) and Thomas Dufour (Searchmont - 1:00.22) as the skier from Skead posted times of 30.59 and 51.88 seconds.

Following are the top three girls in the combined GS races in Elliot Lake:

Girls - U12 Division
1st - Leona Orlando (Searchmont) - 52.86
2nd - Zara Faganely-Yarema (Searchmont) - 54.95
3rd - Beatrice Filice (Searchmont) - 55.63

Girls - U10 Division
1st - Milena Frescura (Elliot Lake) - 57.97
2nd - Clara Russell (Adanac) - 1:03.63
3rd - Khloe Real (Searchmont) - 1:07.24

A pair of provincial championships also took place in the past few weeks as four members of the Adanac Ski Club were part of the U16 NOD team that made their way to Searchmont for the all-Ontario competition.

Elliot St Onge Winckel, Cael Manella, Asher Hunt and Lauren Bouchard took part in the three-day event where Bouchard finished in the top thirty to earn her spot at the Eastern Canada showdown noted above.

Her best showing was an 11th place finish in Sault Ste Marie in the Slalom #1 race. Meanwhile, the Adanac quartet of Anna Corsi, Rebecca Jutras, Nicholas Pegues and Ella Prosperi trekked south to Collingwood for the OCUP U14 Provincial Championships, with both Prosperi (4th) and Jutras (9th) cracking the top ten in the Super G.

Finally, the U10/U12 stream of ASC finished their March break in style, taking part in the Muskoka Rodeo hosted at Hidden Valley Highlands Ski Area in Hunstville.

Arya Grossi (U10) showed the way for the Sudbury contingent with 3rd and 4th place results while Clara Russell, Cameron Hodgins, Rohan Saidi-Smith and Oliva Spry all posted top-ten showings.

More than 40 skiers in the 8-12 age range are in Sault Ste Marie this weekend as Adanac Ski Club joins other NOD entries from the Honda Cup.
