NOJHL MVP repeats for first time in sixty years

It's been sixty years since the NOJHL (Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League) has seen a player repeat as league MVP - though the northern junior loop was several versions earlier than the current NOJHL when Marty Reynolds turned the trick for the North Bay Trappers in 1964-1965 & 1965-1966.

Now the 79 year-old who went on to play for the likes of the Port Huron Flags, Columbus Owls and Flint Generals, all of the IHL (International Hockey League), has company.

Running away with his second straight league scoring title by an astounding 26-point margin, Greater Sudbury Cubs' forward Lucas Signoretti was named the winner of the Carlo Catterello Trophy for the second straight year - though the 2023-2024 recognition came as a member of the Espanola Paper Kings.

The honour for the soon-to-be 21 year-old who leads the NOJHL playoff scoring race with 11 points in four games was among the local highlights as the loop announced the various hardware winners earlier this week.

With the major awards fairly well distributed, the Cubs would also secure Coach of the Year accolades for Darryl Moxam as well as the NOJHL Team Goaltending Award for Fewest Goals allowed, with Noah Beaulne, Karsen Chartier, Matthew Vahramian and Stephen Totl all playing a part between the pipes.

Sudbury all-stars included forwards Lucas Signoretti and Samuel Assinewai, defenceman Mason Chitaroni and coach Darryl Moxam, all on the first team.

Trainer Chris Seguin was named to the third all-star team while Mason Walker and Alex Valade cracked the rookie second all-star team lineup while Sudbury native Kaden Wicklander of the Espanola Paper Kings did likewise on the first unit.
