Cubs sweep aside the Storm and move on to the semis
2025-03-26

A 2-0 shutout of the Iroquois Falls Storm did, in fact, give the defending NOJHL champion Greater Sudbury Cubs a four game sweep in this best of seven quarter-final affair.

But with the exception of a 7-1 game one triumph, none of these victories came particularly easy for the regular season league leaders - including their final outing in Iroquois Falls.

But for a late first period power play goal from Lucas Signoretti and an insurance marker early in period three from Samuel Assinewai, there would have been a whole lot of zeroes on the scoreboard at Jus Jordan Arena Wednesday night.

Shots on goal totals that were registered at 40-32 in favour of the Cubs suggests that the Storm were not about to go down lightly, even after suffering a heart-breaking overtime loss in game three the previous night.

Karsen Chartier picked up the win between the pipes for Sudbury while Maverick Fletcher was tagged with the loss as a pair of local netminders stood tall in the series finale.

The Cubs were joined by the second place Hearst Lumberjacks in semi-final play as the northernmost franchise racked up their fourth straight win over the Powassan Voodoos last night as well, with scores in that series as follows: 7-4; 7-2; 7-3; 4-3.

The Timmins Rock still have their sights set on a first round sweep have claimed victory in their first two outings with the Soo Eagles (4-1; 4-0) with games scheduled in northern Michigan for the next three nights.

Meanwhile, the Blind River Beavers and Soo Thunderbirds continue to see-saw back and forth in the 4 v 5 match-up, for former having taken games one (1-0) and three (4-3) while the latter bounced back in the second (5-4) and fourth (4-2) encounters in this closely matched tilt.

With all of the quarter-finals set to be completed no later than Tuesday, one would expect that the Cubs will be able to open at home next Thursday (April 3rd) at the Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex.
