No lack of Chills to be found at Bugarski Cup in Barrie
2025-03-24

With 25% of the 12-team field representatives of the Northern Chill Volleyball Club, odds were reasonable that some hardware might be heading north following 15U Girls Bugarski Cup – Trillium Green E tournament play in Barrie earlier this month.

That said, securing two of the top four placements was something to crow about for the Sudbury side as the Chill Blue Wave, Chill Blackout and Chill Icebergs battled their way through a fun-filled day of action at Eastview Secondary School.

The Blue Wave followed a fifth place finish in Richmond Hill one month earlier with a silver medal performance in March, this despite being on the wrong end of their morning pool tie-breaker that would see all three teams finish 1-1.

The locals opened with a three set win over the Panthers Overload from Sturgeon Falls / North Bay (12-25, 28-26, 15-10) before dropping to .500 following a 21-25, 16-25 setback at the hands of E381 from Etobicoke.

A B3 placement would force the Sudbury girls to work their way through some top end competition, toppling the Chill Blackout (D2) clubmates in straight sets (25-17, 25-23), outlasting the T-West Sparrows (C1) from Toronto (18-25, 25-22, 15-12) in the quarter-finals and doing the same to Georgetown Impact (D3) in a battle of teams that improved as the day wore on (18-25, 25-12, 15-12).

Unfortunately, the Titans Ambush (Scarborough) proved to be too much (14-25, 15-25) for the northern squad that features Emma Aubé, Sovia Borota Thompson, Olivia Cormier, Danika Drolet, Hailey Villeneuve, Savannah Farinha, Jillian Fitzgerald, Alexie Houle, Ella Kolari, Jillian Martin, Isabel Toby, Macy Velcich, head coach Jason Radley, assistant coach Melanie Toby and team manager Melanie Franson.

Part of the Pool C troika, the Chill 15U Icebergs also split their morning matches, dousing the Steel City Ignite Fire from Sault Ste Marie (25-8, 25-21) but losing to T-West, 23-25, 10-25.

The Icebergs also strung together a pair of quick playoff wins, besting Shockwave Volt from Toronto (25-12, 25-9) and the Barrie Elites Vortex (26-24, 25-11) before also falling victim to the juggernaut Titans, 17-25, 22-25.

Relegated to the battle for third place, the squad that entered the event ranked 6th came up just a little short against Georgetown as the Impact prevailed, 10-25, 25-22, 15-9.

Sliding into fourth place and a top tier finish were Chill Icebergs members Vienna Bock, Zoe Doucet, Jordyn Gillis, Nora Hoy-Riehl, Mariama Jalloh, Avery O’Brien, Isabella Palladino, Isabella Parsons, Jayden Roy, Ella Shonwise, Mya Switzer, Codie Ward and the team staff of Cindy Barter-Rubic (head coach), Kurtis Gillis (assistant coach), Cynthia Gillis (manager) and Cindy Switzer (manager).

Rounding out the local entries, the Northern Chill Blackout from Espanola mirrored their in-town sisters with a 1-1 record in pool play before succumbing to both the Chill Blue Wave and the Steel City Ignite.

Corie Brown, Selena Chiblow Carpenter, Hannah Donnelly, Anna Olsen, Kate Neufeld, Brooklynn Ferguson, Cadence Piche, Adley Rapcewicz, Brooklynn Toulouse, Nylan Withers and Amber Brizuela all cracked the roster that is being guided by head coach Terri-Lynn Chiblow, assistant coach Lee-Ann Ferguson and manager Jim Ferguson.
