L.U. flag football shows well, beaten by defending national champs in SF play
2025-03-03

The Milton Open might not have been an officially sanctioned tournament under the auspices of the OWIFA (Ontario Women's Intercollegiate Football Association), but it most certainly served as a confidence builder for the Laurentian Voyageurs.

Presented by the tandem of Football Ontario and the Detroit Lions, the Milton Open gathered ten teams together a few weeks ago, most of which were built around a core of university flag football talent in Ontario.

Kicking things off against the Mustangs (Western University based team), the Voyageurs received an early rushing touchdown courtesy of Maija Potvin with both defenses shutting the door after that as L.U. earned a hard fought 6-0 win.

Potvin would have plenty of company on the scoresheet in game two as majors from Sydney Coe, Mya Farmer, Kelly Clark and Maija Potvin propelled Laurentian to a 28-0 win over HEL's Angels (Brock University), with Zoe Rienguette adding a key interception for the Voyageurs.

Seeded first entering quarter-final action, the locals squeezed a whole lot of scoring between an opening touchdown for Young & Restless and a somewhat inconsequential major on the final play of the game as Laurentian advanced thanks to a 20-13 victory.

Kelly Clark was on the receiving end of a pair of TD passes, with Sydney Coe adding another major through the air, along with a one point conversion receipt, to go along with another from Maija Potvin.

The semi-final draw was not a favourable one for the blue and gold, pitted against the defending Canadian 7v7 Touch Football champions, the London Legends. Despite the lofty accomplishments of their opponents, the Voyageurs would take this battle right down to the final few minutes.

Though L.U. could not convert, offensively, on another interception from Rienguette, they did manage to match majors early in the game, with Chloe Rinaldi hauling in a long pass as a Sydney Coe conversion reception gave the Sudbury squad a 7-6 lead.

That lasted exactly one play as the Legends went deep to the end zone for a six-pointer of their own, taking a 13-7 lead to the halftime break.

Laurentian (Sydney Coe) would score on their first drive of the second half, knotting the contest at 13-13, a score that remained until the final few minutes. A fourth down conversion in the red zone would give the Legends a 20-13 win as London went on to claim the banner as Laurentian placed third.

The Laurentian team assembles the following players: Hunter Brear, Peyton Brear, Cayleigh Brûlé, Brooke Campeau, Kelly Clark, Sydney Coe, Addison Elliott, Mya Farmer, Jade Marriott, Claire McInroy, Katie Miglioranza, Maija Potvin, Adasyn Radey, Zoe Rienguette, Chloe Rinaldi and coaches Lance Patrie, Véronique St. Jean and Brett Walter.
