Laurentian no match for mighty Gee Gees
2025-02-26

The Ottawa Gee Gees knew full well to had to squash the hopes of an up and coming Laurentian Voyageurs team early in their OUA men's basketball quarter-final last weekend - and that is exactly what they did.

Up 29-14 by the end of the first quarter of play, the second ranked team in the country refused to let up, outscoring the visiting Voyageurs in each and every quarter, ending the brief Laurentian playoff run with an 81-50 victory.

The Gee Gees attack was led by the quartet of Ankit Choudhary (19), Jacques-Melaine Guemeta (16), Owen Kenney (11) and Dragan Stajic (10) while only Kamil Dia Hantchi (14) and Daniel Muila-Mwaka (12) managed to hit double digits for L.U.

The Voyageurs picked a bad time to really struggle with their shooting percentages, eclipsed badly by the homeside by in all around field goal percentage (47.5% vs 31.1%) as well as from beyond the arc (43.8% vs 19.2%).

Laurentian held the upper hand from the free throw line (87.5% vs 47.8%), but given that Ottawa went to the line 15 more times than L.U. (23 vs 8), the efficiency provided little advantage.

The Sudbury representatives more than held their own in the rebounding department (42 vs 35), with Ismael Konate (11 rebounds) and Daniel Muila-Mwaka (10) making their presence felt.

The Gee Gees, who posted the best record in the OUA at 20-2, had taken both ends of their home and home regular season series with Laurentian, slipping past coach Brandon Edwards' troops on their visit to northern Ontario (59-51) but looking for more in command in the rematch a few weeks later in Ottawa (90-58).

In just his second year with the team, Edwards led Laurentian to a notable step forward in terms of their record (4-18 in 2023-2024 to 11-11 in 2024-2025) as well as recording a key playoff road win thanks to their 75-59 triumph over the Windsor Lancers on February 19th.
