Laurentian men move on while the women are eliminated
2025-02-22

The Laurentian Voyageurs men’s basketball team are playing their best basketball of the season - and it shows.

Coach Brandon Edwards and company travelled to Windsor this past Wednesday and toppled the Lancers on their home court (75-59), advancing through to the round of eight.

Nginyu Ngala and Ismael Konate netted 21 points each to pace the L.U. attack with Shawn Barthelemy chipping in with an even dozen for the visitors.

The Laurentian squad, which dropped an 89-81 decision to Windsor in regular season play en route to an 11-11 record this year featured a roster that effectively included only one player (Ngala) who could draw upon any kind of U Sports playoff experience of note.

"The playoffs are a completely new season and we're a completely different team," said Edwards, his team on the road again today to face the Ottawa Gee Gees in quarter-final action in the nation’s capital.

"I think the group that played Windsor the other night is a team that really understands what we are trying to do now. I think the improvement showed itself."

Knocking off a 12-10 Windsor team on the road in the playoffs is obviously a nice win for coach Edwards and his team in just his second season with the group - but the 20-2 Gee Gees that lie ahead are on another level altogether.

"The biggest thing for us - and we've learned this time and time again - is that we have to go out there and attack," said Edwards. "At this stage of the season, it's about being in attack mode and never going into a game without that mindset."

Never one to get drawn in to outlandish predictions and such, Edwards has a clear vision of where he wants the focus of his players to lie when they hit the court against a team that they lost to at home in January (59-51), but had to within a single score (54-51) with just 41 seconds to play.

"We're not talking about winning," he stressed. "We're talking about going out there and playing our best and focusing on what we need to do to be at our best, because this will require our best."

"We're playing the number two team in the country and they are steamrolling people in our conference right now."

The Laurentian ladies were eliminated this past Wednesday following an 81-72 loss to the Brock Badgers as Emilie Lafond (20) and Cadence Pecore (14) helped to keep the Lady Vees in the game.
