They may not top the charts in terms of Division I team sports, but when it comes to female high-school wrestling in Sudbury, nobody does it better at the moment than the Sudbury Secondary School North Stars.
The downtown school which represents the merger of the one-time athletic powerhouses that were the Sudbury High Wolves and Sheridan Tech Blue Devils secured gold in four separate weight classes on the girls side of the draw while also sweeping both MVP honours.
Most valuable wrestlers Sophie Coutu (61 kg) and Caleb Cope (89 kg) were joined by SSS teammates Alyssa Howard Smith (51 kg), Grace Beange (57.5 kg) and Sophie Simo (72 kg) in earning gold at the Ron Preston SDSSAA Wrestling Championships recently.
The North Stars may have laid claim to the Girls Championship banner but it was the Macdonald-Cartier Panthères under the guidance of alumnus and former OFSAA medal winner Celeste Contant-Rodrigues who walked off with both the Boys Team aggregate title as well as the Overall Team crown.
Showing the way for ESMC were gold medal winners Markus Van der Ligt (67.5 kg) and Adam BenBayda (95 kg) along with a slew of silver medallists: Gabrielle Chenard (51 kg), Sophie Dutrisac (57.5 kg), Maya Collard Punkari (61 kg), Victoria Seguin (64 kg), Blake Thaxter (64 kg) and Riley Liefso (130+ kg).
Other schools making their way to the top of the podium included the Lively Hawks (Janelle Jolette (44 kg); Lucas Laquerre (51 kg)), Lasalle Lancers (Karthkeya Kancherlapalli (44 kg); Tyson Wensley (47.5 kg), Ethan Brysson (61 kg); Keenan Duval (130+ kg)), Marymount Academy (Mia Dufrense (54 kg)), Lo-Ellen Park (Sophie Keenan (64 kg), Nathan Blackwell (64 kg); Max Hunter (72 kg); Tanner Jackson (77kg)), Bishop Carter (Lexi Winnington-Ingram (67.5 kg); Kane Chartrand (57.5 kg)), Confederation (Jude Shields (54 kg); Owen Parro (130 kg)) and Ecole Sacré-Coeur (David Turgeon (83 kg)).
The Rookies of the Year awards were presented to Lexi Winnington-Ingram from Bishop Carter and Karthikeya Kancherlapalli from Lasalle.
