Coming off a huge win over the nationally ranked Lakehead Thunderwolves, the Laurentian Voyageurs men's basketball team are ready to make their return to OUA post-season play on Wednesday.
Posting a record of 11-11 in regular season play which included three straight wins to close off the year, the Voyageurs will have to make the long trip to southwestern Ontario to do battle with the Windsor Lancers (12-10).
The teams met back on November 22nd in Windsor, with the Lancers posting an 89-81 win. After stringing together a five-game winning streak from Halloween Night (87-66 vs Guelph) through to November 16th (83-64 vs McMaster), the locals were in tough in January.
Five of their eight games were opposite either the Ottawa Gee Gees (20-2), Queen's Gaels (16-6) or Carleton Ravens (15-7). That said, the tides started to turn earlier this month when a three pointer from beyond the arc beat the buzzer to lift Laurentian past Queen's 72-69 at their now annual Sudbury Arena triple-header.
This past weekend, Laurentian upset Lakehead (87-64), in large part thanks to a 23-7 second quarter run for the homeside. Kamil Dia Hantchi (26 pts), Shawn Barthelemy (17), Daniel Muila-Mwaka (14) and Nginyu Ngala (12) paced the Voyageurs' attack.
The Laurentian women are in a tougher spot, their record of 7-15 matching the ladies opposite the Brock Badgers (16-6), an opponent which defeated the northern crew 70-58 in Sudbury.
The Lady Vees dropped their regular season finale, beaten 65-53 by Lakehead but receiving some help to edge out the York Lions (also 7-15) on a tie-breaker.
The top Laurentian scorers against Lakehead included Emilie Lafond (10), Molly Adams (9), Cadence Pecore (9), Princess Bernardino (7) and Melanie Cloutier (7) as the Sudbury reps picked up a huge win in the final week of play, toppling the Nipissing Lakers 75-68 a week ago tomorrow.
