Defensively, through a three game Saturday schedule at the York South Silver Knights Tournament last weekend, the GSBA (Greater Sudbury Basketball Association) U12 Storm boys were very, very good.
By the time the final arrived on Sunday, they were great.
With no individual player hitting double digits in scoring in any one game, the Sudbury lads moved the ball around selflessly, racking up pool play victories over Golden Eagles Basketball from Mississauga (46-29), Elevation Athletics from Newmarket (55-24) and the host York South Silver Knights (49-27).
Pitted against a Hall of Fame Hustle Basketball Academy squad that covers an area from roughly Alliston to Aurora, the northern boys clamped down even more, walking off with a 45-13 win.
"Teams couldn’t get easy shots or drives to the hoop on us this weekend," noted Sudbury head coach Martin Nadeau. "Every game, someone different stepped up, with some sharp shooting from the outside, or providing an offensive rebounding presence, or with our speedy guards pushing up the floor."
The team leaders in various categories included:
Rebounds: Rohan Saidi-Smith, Niyam PatelSteals: Tejeda Gieselman, Mérick Nadeau, Hudson Blais, Logan Martikkala
Blocked Shots: David Olili, Mason Kamuntu
Rounding out the team roster are Médric Raymond and Ridge Maskevich.
