Greater Sudbury Cubs roll right into 2025
2025-01-05

A quick start and an impressive third period allowed the Greater Sudbury Cubs to secure a 15th straight win Saturday night on the road, downing the Powassan Voodoos 7-2 in their first match of the new year.

Safe to say win number sixteen will come much easier.

After first period tallies from Lucas Antonioni, Jacob Lamoureux and Jacob Signoretti vaulted the Cubs to a 3-1 first period lead, a four goal outburst broke open the affair that sat at 3-2 following a solid middle stanza by the Voodoos.

Cameron Shanks, Nolan Newton, Lucas Signoretti and Daks Klinkhammer rounded out the scoring for the winners with Jack Nolan and Daniil Viscu replying in a losing cause for Powassan.

Making his first in a Cubs uniform, former OHL goaltender Karsen Chartier turned aside 30 of 32 shots for the win while Austin Seibel (25-32) was tagged with the loss for the Voodoos.

Their second encounter of 2025 sees Sudbury being awarded a 1-0 win on Tuesday following the leave of absence that was granted to the Elliot Lake Vikings for the second half of the current campaign.

As such, the local juniors will next see action on Thursday (January 9th), hosting the French River Rapids at the Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex with the Cubs now holding a 13 point lead over the Hearst Lumberjacks in the NOJHL standings.

The 29-2-1-1 record that the Sudbury crew currently boast accounts for the highest winning percentage in the country in the CJHL, with the Cubs also ranked number one in the minds of the panel who assesses these things on a weekly basis for that same organization.
