Having picked up points in four straight games, the Sudbury Wolves will start a five game homestand this weekend with two encounters in the Nickel City, looking to continue to work their way up the Eastern Conference standings and challenge for first round home ice advantage.
SECOND HALF THE SAME AS THE FIRSTThe local juniors begin the second half of their eight game set with the North Bay Battalion by welcoming their divisional rivals to town Friday night. In four games to date, the Wolves have recorded three wins and an overtime loss, with the teams set to meet three times during the month of January.
In the 25 season series between these teams dating back to 1998-1999, Sudbury has claimed victory on only three previous occasions - though two have come in very recent times (2018-2019; 2019-2020). The Pack and Battalion have also deadlocked four times as the matchup that is nearing 200 head to head battles dates back to the franchise start for their opponents in Brampton.
The Wolves will be looking to make it six straight wins at home over the North Bay crew, a sequence that included a pair of 5-4 overtime wins at the Old Barn last season. Of course, this pertains to regular season only given a four game sweep by the Battalion in the playoffs, with Sudbury veterans sure to keep that top of mind as they look to remain on a roll in 2025.
A STREAK SHOWING LITTLE SIGNS OF PETERING OUTThanks to a pair of victories in early October (5-2 at home; 1-0 on the road), the Sudbury Wolves need to secure just a single point in their final two encounters with the Peterborough Petes to make it five series wins in their last six battles - though coach Scott Barney and company are surely looking for far more than just a single point against the worst team in the conference.
The close as can be victory in the Lock City in the fall easily bettered the record for fewest combined goals scored in a game between the teams contested in Peterborough (a record that previously sat at three).
With Chase Coughlan lighting the lamp at the 6:55 mark of period one and Finn Marshall producing a stellar 40-save shutout performance, the Wolves needed next to no offense to extend the “win followed by a loss in Petes’ Country” trend that dates back to 2018-2019.
After having a nine game home winning streak against Peterborough snapped on November 17th 2023 thanks to a 7-4 loss (Jonathan Melee had a hat trick for the Petes while Evan Konyen netted a pair in a losing cause), the Wolves will look to make it three in a row at home over their Lakelands Region foes, with the teams set to meet one last time on March 15th in Peterborough.
