Surrendering just six goals against over the course of a seven game schedule will win any boys high-school team a whole lot of tournaments.
In the case of the St Charles College Cardinals, let's make it three championship banners in the five times the St Michael's Mustangs competition has been contested in Niagara Falls since 2018.
The Cards posted a 7-0-0 record at their most recent run and while the team did not light the world on fire offensively, there was no need to when two goals a game would provide the necessary margin of victory.
The locals cruised through round robin play, taking down, in succession, the Lakeshore Gators from Port Colborne (5-0), the host St Michael's Mustangs (7-0), defending champion St Thomas Aquinas Flames from London (6-1) and the Aldershot Aces from Burlington (2-1).
From there, it was on to familiar territory as St Charles sent their fellow SDSSAA reps home packing, downing the Lo-Ellen Park Knights 4-1 in the quarter-finals and moving on to the gold medal game thanks to a 3-0 victory over the River East Kodiaks from Winnipeg.
The final featured an international flavour as the northern crew stopped the St Edward Eagles (Lakewood, Ohio) 5-2, improving their overall season mark to 26-1-1.
Backstopped by the goaltending tandem of Rowan McCann and Brody Mabbott, the Cardinals continue to enjoy an element of depth up front that sees various players stepping to the forefront at different times.
With seven goals and a pair of assists to his credit, Liam Judd earned tournament MVP honours, with the likes of Nolan Corriveau (6G - 3A), Cameron Seguin (3G - 3A), Jackson Noble (4G - 2A), Reegan Billard (1G - 5A) and Hayden Myre (3G - 2A) all taking turns leading the offense.
St Charles College will look to close out the first half of their SDSSAA schedule with a flawless 10-0 mark as they take their nine game winning streak into an encounter with the Lockerby Vikings (2-7-0) Wednesday afternoon at the Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex.
