Taking three of four points on a weekend in which they hosted the sixth ranked team in the country before travelling to visit a tough northern rival constitutes a pretty good weekend for the Sudbury Wolves - even if the points were not produced in the manner one might expect.
Of course, when you're within a minute or so of escaping with the full bounty of four points, one cannot help but to be somewhat disappointed - even if the two-game set exceeded the expectations of most realistic and knowledgeable team followers.
Despite facing a Windsor Spitfires' team that was ripe for a bit of a step back following a Thursday night win in North Bay in which the visitors bolted out to a 4-0 first period lead and cruised to a 5-3 victory, few could have predicted the offensive explosion the Wolves would unleash one night later.
Safely in the bottom half of the OHL in terms of team scoring, the Sudbury lads pummelled the Spitfires 9-3 as Quentin Musty produced arguably his best game in a Wolves' uniform, his six point outing (2G-4A) more than doubling his numbers from the previous six games combined.
Alex Pharand matched Musty with a two-goal effort of his own with Nathan Villeneuve, Donovan McCoy, Kocha Delic, Kieron Walton and Lucas Di Giantommaso adding solo tallies.
Jean-Christoph Lemieux, Cole Davis and Ilya Protas countered for the Spits who closed out their northern swing with a 2-1 overtime loss in Sault Ste Marie.
With these two points in their back pockets, the "Pack" looked to secure a weekend sweep, taking a 5-4 lead into the final minute of play opposite the North Bay Battalion.
Unfortunately, Jacob Leblanc would send the contest to OT, beating Nate Krawchuk with 0:56 showing on the clock and Owen Van Steensel finished what he started, netting both the first goal of the game as well as the game-winning goal in OT to send the North Bay fans home happy.
Also tallying for the Battalion were Reyth Smith, Ethan Procyszyn and Stepan Chukharev while rookie Rowan Henderson paced the Wolves with a pair of snipes, joined on the scoresheet by Blake Clayton, Quentin Musty and Kocha Delic.
Coach Scott Barney and company are now looking at another busy weekend ahead, welcoming the Guelph Storm to town on Friday night and then hitting the road for matchups with both the Niagara Ice Dogs (Saturday) and Oshawa Generals.
