Only the St Benedict Bears stand between the Champlain Requins and their dreams of three-peating as SDSSAA Division "B" Senior Flag Football champions this fall.
That said, the Bears looked to be a force in the semi-finals, blasting the previously unbeaten Sudbury Secondary North Stars 42-0 in the early game at the James Jerome Sports Complex on Wednesday afternoon.
With a couple of key defenders out of the SSS lineup for this contest, the Bears wasted little time putting this one to bed as Neva Spadafora (3 TDs), Elsa Blum (2 TDs) and Caileigh Ryan (TD) all picked up six point scores, while kicker Aria Petroski added seven points of her own, all on converts.
The North Stars went 5-0 in regular season play as an eight team loop would mean that not every opponent would be faced, with Sudbury Secondary advancing to the semi-finals thanks to a 33-1 triumph over the Sacré-Coeur Griffons.
St Benedict posted a 3-2 mark in their first five outings, a stretch that included a 22-20 setback at the hands of Champlain but bounced back nicely in post-season play, blanking the Lockerby Vikings 20-0 in the quarter-finals.
Champlain, meanwhile, broke free in the second half of their semi-final with the Macdonald-Cartier Panthères, building upon a 22-20 lead at the break and finishing things off with a 36-20 victory.
A very well-balanced attack would feature scoring from Katrine Fortier (TD + 2 X 2pt conversions), Sophie Leveiller (2 TDs), Marissa McLean (TD), Dalia Belanger (TD) and Gabby Foreshew (2 pt conversion).
ESMC would counter with the likes of Jenna Cole, Tessa Roberge and Marquise Castonguay, all with majors, as well as Gabrielle Demers with a pair of converts.
