Already in the midst of a 13-game winning streak and having climbed to #5 in the CJHL Top 20 Rankings, the Greater Sudbury Cubs received even more good news this week.
Forward Nolan Newton, who put up 62 points in 32 games with the Cubs last year in a season split between the NOJHL and OHL (Barrie Colts) has been returned to Sudbury.
Dealing with nagging injuries and trying to crack a Colts' roster that is built to take a serious run at an OHL title this year, Newton and the Colts acknowledged that his development would likely be enhanced in taking on a much larger role for a squad looking to make a return visit to the Centennial Cup next spring.
With no points collected in four games in Barrie this year, the smooth-skating 18 year-old is back in a loop that he led in post-season scoring earlier this year, amassing 22 points in 15 games as Sudbury claimed their first NOJHL title since 2007-2008, a time at which the franchise was knows as the Kal Tire Sudbury Jr Wolves.
Goals by Lucas Signoretti, Mason Chitaroni, Jacob Lamoureux and Ben Harris lifted the Cubs to an efficient 4-0 win over the Espanola Paper Kings on Halloween night as Sudbury hit the lucky thirteen mark in this latest hot string.
Goaltender Noah Beaulne stopped only 13 shots in registering his second shutout of the season as he and his teammates now prepare for a northern swing this weekend with the Big Nickel Hockey Tournament monopolizing Countryside Arena.
With a record of 14-1-1-1, the Cubs will visit the Hearst Lumberjacks (12-4-0-1) on Thursday, followed by the Timmins Rock (10-6-0-0) on Friday and closing off against a much-improved Iroquois Falls Storm (7-12-0-0) on Saturday.
Sudbury will be back at home next Thursday (November 14th) as the Soo Thunderbirds (9-7-1-0) come to town.
