The Lasalle Lancers juniors were having some challenges containing bulldog Lively Hawks running back Bennett Timmers last Thursday as the young man rambled in from 20, 21 and 33 yards for majors in a 43-13 win for LDSS.
Lively defensive back Connor Westaway can understand their pain.
"He's terrifying in practice," noted the 15 year-old grade ten student in only his second year of football. "I've tried to slow him down a few times. It didn't turn out too well."
Timmers had plenty of help with the Hawks attack as Dylan Jackson (fumble recovery - 42 yard return), Dean Vildis (one yard TD run + 4 PATs) and Jackson Bentley (26 yard pass from QB Kade Campbell) all reached the end zone, with defensive lineman Carter Pigeau tacking on a safety for good measure.
Carter Oystrick (56 yard TD pass from Lunden Campbell-Runia) and Deran Cooper (83 yard run) accounted for the six point scores for Lasalle, with the latter also drilling a convert through the posts.
As is so often the case, Lively has done a great job of assembling young men with no previous football experience and teaching them the basics of the game. Case in point: Connor Westaway.
"I did not follow football a whole lot before I joined last year," he said. "Before, I didn't play too many contact sports - and I wasn't the best catcher either, to be honest."
"But I focus on just staying wide and not much else."
Thankfully, not all ball carriers are as tough to bring down as his teammates in practice. "Aim low and tackle at the knees," noted Westaway, who also appreciated the work of the Lively lads entrusted with putting points on the board.
"Number 88 (Alex Campbell) had some beauty catches and runs - and #12 (Timmers) was trucking eight players on one play, so that was pretty cool," said Westaway.
The second game of the night would see the St Benedict Bears overpower the St Charles College Cardinals 48-27 as Oliver Poupore and Sam Julius scored two touchdowns each for the winners, who improved to 3-0, tied with the Lo-Ellen Park Knights.
Nathan MacIsaak, Holden Beange and Evan Demarchi also made their way across the goal line, with Domingo Quintana making good on no less than six point after attempts.
Zion Abiodun-Olaoke answered with a pair of majors for the Cards, joined in that department by teammates Nolan Larche and Emmanuel Hagan (one TD each), with kicker Josh Rioux going 3/4 on his PATs.
Action this week will be highlighted by the St Benedict - Lo-Ellen showdown Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. at the James Jerome Sports Complex.
