One game in and the Rivière-des-Francais Muskies girls flag football team have equalled their win total from 2023.
"I think we're going to struggle a little bit on defense, just because we lost some really good players - but I think our offense can be a lot better," noted veteran two-way threat Summer Loder following a season-opening 22-6 win over the Sacré Coeur Griffons in which the Noelville crew looked solid on both sides of the ball.
"We have improved a lot."
The Muskies have managed to integrate some newcomers, like cornerback Isabelle Rochon, who seems to be quickly taking to this whole "flag grabbing" thing - perhaps on the words of wisdom from her teammates that have already travelled this path.
"You never give up, never stop running," suggested Loder, who suited up on defense in grade nine and offense one year ago before staying on for pretty much the entire contest on Tuesday.
"And you have to be willing to throw your body around - because you're going to have to. That's what you've got to do."
Mélodie Hébert scored a pair of touchdowns to lead the way for Rivières-des-Francais, also making good on a field goal, with Audrey Leblanc (TD) and Summer Loder (PAT) supplying the remainder of the offense.
Lexa Pharand darted home from the seven yard line for the Griffons, prompting a wild sideline celebration given that Sacré Coeur had been shutout in six straight games last fall.
The Sudbury Secondary North Stars also likely raised a few eyebrows with a week one triumph, defeating the Lockerby Vikings 15-7 as a quartet of Senior Division "B" matchups monopolized the turf on Tuesday.
Sophie Tchuente Simo racked up a touchdown, a rouge and two converts while Grace Beange chipped in with a TD of her own for Sudbury Secondary. Izzy Lanteigne reached the end zone for Lockerby.
Despite losing some key talent to graduation, the Champlain Requins appear more than ready to challenge for a divisional banner this fall, blasting the Macdonald-Cartier Panthères 35-6 in their curtain-riser for 2024.
Dalia Bélanger and Marissa McLean scored two majors apiece, with Sophie Léveiller getting the other while Olivia Lachapelle and Marissa McLean recorded two-point converts, while Nova Roy added the more conventional single point kicking variety.
Arianna Tonkavic countered with six points of her own in a losing cause for Macdonald-Cartier.
Finally, the St Benedict Bears closed off a complete day of matchups with a 25-0 whitewashing of the Lively Hawks as Sienna Laurent crossed the goal line on two separate occasions for the Bears.
She would be joined on the scoresheet by Neva Spadafora and Folakanmi Alabi, both with touchdowns, as well as a single from Aria Petroski.
