There was nothing in a winless opening weekend that likely shocked rookie Laurentian Voyageurs men's baseball head coach Brayden MacEwen.
For as much as he may have hoped to avoid the inevitable, the fate he suffered had been endured by those who have walked in these shoes before him.
The optimism of the still young bench boss will be put to the test, but for the time being, MacEwen was still able to single out several highlights despite taking it on the chin in double-header matchups with both the Queen's Gaels (9-3 & 20-5) and the York Lions (12-2 & 12-3).
Much of that had to do with the performance of the incoming class he would like to move forward with, freshmen like Kyle Kennedy, who singled in his very first at-bat to drive in the first Laurentian run of the year as the Voyageurs trailed Queen's just 4-3 after three innings of play before being "one-runned" to death (Gaels scored twice in the fourth and once each in the 5th, 6th and 7th innings).
On the mound, rookie Fynn Patterson surrendered just one run in 1.2 innings of work while both Kyle Kennedy and fellow newcomer William Arsenault got their feet wet as OUA pitchers - without looking completely overwhelmed.
Though MacEwen would have liked to see more from his offense, some of the expected bats did produce much of what L.U. had to show, including veterans Andrew Webber and Ethan Berubé with five hits apiece and designated hitter Noah Casault with four RBIs.
Sudbury native and lead-off hitter Noah Leveille came around to score four times as the Voyageurs get set to head to the GTA for another four game set this weekend, this time opposing the TMU (Toronto Metropolitan University) Bold and the University of Toronto Varsity Blues.
